Mesquite, TX (Oct 21) - Wayne Johnson avoided problems on a tacky track to claim the $3,000 opening night first place cash as Devil's Bowl Speedway opened the 38th Annual Winter Nationals. Randy Kirkland led the USA Limited Modifieds to the checkered flag and Bobby Ruffin claimed the street stock win.
The track was fast, and having clean air out front was an advantage early in the evening as five of the seven ASCS Sprint Car heat races were won by the driver starting on the outside of the front row. With 55 sprint cars in the pits, earning one of the top 16 spots in passing points was difficult. The heat races were won by Dustin Morgan, Tony Bruce, Jr., Koby Barksdale, Bryan Dobesh, Aaron Reutzel, Mason Moore and Eric Baldaccini.
That left 39 drivers trying to earn a spot in the feature through one of three B mains. Only the top two drivers in each would get into the feature. The top 8 drivers in ASCS National points were in the B mains.
The first B main got off to a rough start when Seth Bergman flipped in turn two on the second lap. On the fifth lap, Larry Howery took a rough ride off the top of turn three after his wing mounts failed. Jeff Swindell won the first B, with Shane Stewart second to advance to the A main.
The other two B mains were uneventful with Gary Wright and Joe Wood, Jr. taking the wins. Jason Johnson and Johnny Herrera used provisionals to make the A.
Sprint Nationals winner Sam Hafertepe, Jr. took the lead of the 25-lap main from the pole and pulled away with a clear track. Dustin Morgan battled for the second spot while Hafertepe pulled away despite a couple early cautions.
Turn two was the most difficult part of the track, sticky but easy for the cars to overpower and slide up. Hafertepe lost the lead to Morgan in that turn as lapped traffic eliminated his lead just past the halfway mark.
Morgan slipped a couple laps later to put Hafertepe back in the lead. Eighth starting Johnson had worked his way up to second by that point, and claimed the lead on the 21st trip around the half-mile oval. The yellow waved seconds later.
Johnson had no trouble on the restart and pulled away to the victory. Hafertepe took the runner-up spot with Koby Barksdale third. The last driver to lock in a starting spot for Saturday's $10,000 to win finale was fourth place Bryan Dobesh.

Randy Kirkland set the pace for the USA Limited Modifieds 15 lapper, taking the victory with a comfortable margin over Jeff McGibboney. Jimmy Staats was third. Those three and Keith Martin won the heats with Robert Vetter winning the B.

#35 Bobby Ruffin
Bobby Ruffin took Terry Carter's #35 street stock to victory lane after a race long battle with Harry Hronas.
