Mesquite, TX (July 9) - Danny Wood paced the Oil Medics Lone Star Region ASCS Sprint Cars from flag to flag at Devil's Bowl Speedway Saturday night.
Patrik Daniel took his third late model win of the season, with Jimmy Staats taking his third USA Limited Modifieds victory. Harry Hronas in Street Stocks and Rick McCommas in USA Modifieds each claimed their second win this year.
ASCS Sprints Feature Winner
#81 Danny Wood
Starting on the pole, Danny Wood took off at the drop of the green flag and stayed out front to the checkered flat of the 25-lap ASCS Sprint Car feature. But it took a while to claim the victory.
The red flag flew seconds after the green as Eric Baldaccini and Evan Pardo got together coming out of turn four. Their wreck collected the #11 of Justin Melton and all three were out of the race before it began. The second attempt to start the race was not better - outside front row starter Zach Chappell looped around and flipped in turn two.
On the third try, Wood pulled away with new outside front row starter Travis Rilat taking the second spot. With a clear track Wood built a small lead while Rilat and Matt Covington battled for the runner-up position. Rilat slipped high in turn two on the drying track, letting Covington past on the ninth circuit.
The leaders were near bumper to bumper in heavy traffic with difficulty passing when the yellow flag flew on the 11th lap. The restart gave Wood a clear track to pull away to a five car length lead until the top cars caught the back of the field on the 19th lap. The yellow flag made another appearance with just 3 laps left in the feature. Wood had not trouble pulling away to take the win on the final restart. Covington and Rilat were second and third with 12th starting George White taking fourth and Brian McClelland rounding out the top five.
Baldaccini, Covington and Wood won the ASCS heat races.
Late Models Feature Winner
#75 Patrik Daniel
It looked like Patrik Daniel would have to settle for third as he chased early leader Skip O'Neal and Max Eddie Thomas around the Devil's Bowl oval in the Late Model main. On the 13th lap, Thomas slowed and stopped in turn four. On the restart Daniel charged low through turn two as O'Neal bobbled to take the lead. Darren Ellis took the third finish position.
Wendall Bolden got past Troy Tindall on the last lap to win the first late model heat, with Ellis easily winning the second heat.
USA Limited Modifieds Feature Winner
#39 Jimmy Staats
Jimmy Staats claimed his third win after a close battle during the USA Limited Modified feature. Jimmy Criswell III set the early pace from the outside of the front row.
Staats took second on the fourth lap and battled side by side with Criswell before taking the lead on the 7th lap.
Criswell was second at the checkered flag with Michael Daniels third. Rickey Haney and Randy Kirkland won the heats.
Street Stocks Feature Winner
#92 Harry Hronas
Harry Hronas and Wally Beaty battled side by side for most of the street stock 12-lapper. Starting on the front row, the pair raced even into the first turn, with Hronas edging ahead out of the second turn. Lap after lap they were side by side several times, but Hronas stayed ahead coming out of the turns ever lap. Beaty made his best attempt on the last lap, but Hronas stayed out front to win for the second straight week. James Shaw, Jr. was third a car length back at the checkered flag. Beaty and Hronas easily won the street stock heats.
USA Modifieds Feature Winner
#39 Rick McCommas
Rick McCommas took off at the drop of the USA Modified feature green flag and never looked back, leading all the way to the checkered flag. Patrik Daniel was second at the finish with Jason Sartain taking third.
Sartain pulled a bumper ahead of Gary Corbin to win the first USA Modified heat - the best heat race of the evening. McCommas topped the other heat.
