Mesquite, TX (July 2) - Harry Hronas claimed his first street stock feature win of the 2011 season at Devil's Bowl Speedway Saturday night in the evening's first feature. Johnny Philpot, Jr. also took his late model to victory land for the first time this year.
Randy Kirkland led the USA Limited Modifieds to the checkered flag. Danny Caldwell scored his second straight USA Modifieds victory.
Late Models Feature Winner
#12 Johnny Philpot, Jr. (2nd from left)
The passing points and inversion system put Johnny Philpot, Jr. on the pole
for the Late Model 15-lapper. Philpot knew he had to get a great start to beat outside front row starter Darren Ellis to the first turn. That is exactly what he did, coming out of turn two with the lead and never letting anyone take the spot for the entire race.
Having won several championships at Devil's Bowl, Ellis knows what it takes to win, but Philpot hit the best line for every corner throughout the race. Wendall Bolden made it a three way battle for the lead.
With the lead trio just a car length apart for most of the race, they kept the fans in suspense as one driver or another tried to take the lead in the turns. Philpot would not be denied though, staying out front every lap to the checkered flag for his first win this year. Bolden got past Ellis on the last lap to claim the second spot.
Bolden and Marcus Baxter topped the late model heat races.
Street Stocks Feature Winner
#92 Harry Hronas
As the defending Devil's Bowl Street Stock Champion, Hronas has faced a competitive field each night. Wally Beaty has won six features this year, but Hronas had yet to find victory lane, until Saturday night.
Starting the 12-lap feature on the outside of the second row, Hronas was able to challenge early leader Richard Murray, and take over the top stop pulling low in turn two on the second lap.
While a extended battle for second place raged behind him, Hronas easily pulled away. By the half-way mark of the caution free feature, he was ahead by half the length of the front straight. Making every turn perfect to the checkered flag, Hornas took the win easily.
Scott Prather held off Wally Beaty to take second at the checkered flag.
Tim McManus held off Beaty to win the first street stock heat, with Brian Bolden running away with the second heat.
USA Limited Modifieds Feature Winner
#42 Randy Kirkland
Randy Kirkland's second USA Limited Modifieds feature win of the season was especially nice with car owner Harry Hronas winning the street stock main.
Chris Cleveland started the feature on the pole and quickly pulled into the lead. Kirkland moved into second, and pulled under Cleveland as they entered the third turn on the third lap. Kirkland powered out of turn four to take the lead as they completed the circuit.
Cleveland tried to contend for the top spot again, but Kirkland was perfect as the charged to victory. Cleveland had to settle for second, with Jeff McGibboney taking the third position
Cleveland topped the first heat race, with McGibboney winning the second heat.
USA Modifieds Feature Winner
#81 Danny Caldwell
Danny Cladwell led the USA Modifieds to the checkered flag for the second straight week. Clyde Dunn, Jr. grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag, with Caldwell moving into second. Cladwell got a nose under Dunn entering the turns a couple times, but could not pull alongside. As they exited turn four on the fourth lap, Dunn suddenly pulled to the inside and slowed.
Caldwell charged into the lead and never looked back. One caution slowed the race, but Caldwell easily pulled away once the green returned. Patrik Daniel was second while Rick McCommas came from the outside fifth row to take third.
Dunn topped a very close, exciting first USA Modifieds heat race, with Caldwell pulling away from everyone to win the other heat.
