Daniel Survives Late Model Carnage for Second Straight Win at Devil's Bowl

Late Models Feature Winner
#75 Patrik Daniel

Mesquite, TX (June 4) - Patrik Daniel avoided an early crash and stayed out front through two red flags to win the Late Models feature at Devil's Bowl Speedway Saturday night, his second win in a row.

Wally Beaty claimed the street stock main for the fifth time this season. Robert Vetter topped the USA Limited Modifieds for his second victory this year. Gary Corbin let the USA Modifieds flag to flaf for his first victory of 2011.

It was a quick night of racing until the Late Models took the track to finish the evening with a 20-lap feature. Things went bad very quickly. Drivers from the middle of the pack trying to pass six and seven cars in each corner made the field four and five wide at times.

Gary Lowe took the early lead from the pole. Johnny Philpot, Jr. was shuffled to the infield in turn two on the second lap, losing a dozen spots as he got back on track. But the caution flew before the lap was complete for another car - and Philpot got his position after lap one back. Which was bad luck.

On the restart Matthew Manning spun in the first turn, and Philpot right behind him could not avoid crashing into Manning's car. Philpot's car came to a stop on top of the #11M, with Darren Ellis' #21 wedged under Philpot's #12

After a red flag cleanup, the race resumed with Lowe out front, with Sloppy Hogg, Marcus Baxter and Patrik Daniel battling for position right behind him. Hogg led the third lap, Low the fourth and Daniel claimed the lead on the fifth lap, after which the third caution of the race flew.

It took two tries to resume the race and get one more lap completed. Lowe had dropped to third when he went around in the top of turn two. Skip O'Neal had no place to go, hitting Lowe's car head on and flying a half-dozen feet into the air as it jumped over the #31.

With half the late model field in the pits with major damage, the race length was cut to 15 laps. Daniel had not trouble pulling away on the restart and pulling away to take the victory.

Sloppy Hogg and Max Eddie Thomas provided most the the excitement in the final run, often side by side and swapping the runner-up position a couple times every lap. Hogg claimed the second spot at the checkered flag. O'Neal, Thomas and Wendall Bolden won the late model heat races.

Street Stocks Feature Winner
#75 Wally Beaty

There was plenty of action early in the street stock main with Darby Shelby, Mark Ross and James Shaw, Jr. all leading at the strip early in the 12-lapper. When the only yellow flag of the race flew after the sixth lap, Wally Beaty was able to restart just a row behind leader Shaw.

Charging around the top of turns one and two, Beaty was out front and never looked back. Taking his fifth feature win of the season by comfortable margin when the checkered flag flew. Harry Hronas and Shaw battled side by side to the line, with Hornas second. Richard Murray and Beaty won the heat races.

Usa Modifieds Feature Winner
#02 Gary Corbin

Gary Corbin took off from the pole position as the green flag dropped on the USA Modifieds and never looked back. Richard McGibboney got a nose along side Corbin a couple times, but had to settle for second in the caution free 15-lapper. Rick McCommas took third in a very close battle with Patrik Daniel. Corbin and Daniel won the Modifieds heat races.

USA Limited Modifieds Feature Winner
#V8 Robert Vetter

Robert Vetter came from the fifth row to win his second USA Limited Modifieds feature of the season.

Mike Meeks, Jr. paces the first lap before Jason Troutman took the top spot with a charge around the rim in turn four. Three laps later the caution free, and Meeks earned a quick trip home by tearing up another car under caution. David Gailey also got an early exit from the feature for retaliation.

Vetter had moved up to third by that time, and as Troutman took off with the drop of the green flag as Vetter claimed second. Three laps later, Vetter was able to pass Troutman for the lead, and stayed out front to win the 15-lapper. Troutman and Chris Cleveland were second and third.

Meeks, Troutman and Steve Sickels won the limited modified heat races.
