By Mike Hughes, HAYS, Kan. (April 5) – “B” feature qualifier Jeremy Frenier got an “A” for his IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified efforts on opening night of the Sunflower Classic special at RPM Speedway Friday.
The 18th starting Frenier raced his way to the front on the 13th lap. Jesse Sobbing challenged before exiting with a flat tire on lap 23. Joe Cleveland made a late charge from that point but had to settle for second behind Frenier in the $1,000 to win Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier.
Rounding out the top five in the Precise Racing BST Series opener were Nate Moore, Travis Sherfick and Cody Gearhart.
Lance Borgman continued his early-season success with the $750 IMCA Sunoco Stock Car checkers.
Jeff Joldersma and Justin Temeyer traded the front spot in the Dirt Track Central Goodland Machine Great Plains Series lidlifter. Temeyer drove of while under caution and Borgman shot from third to first following the ensuing restart.
Joldersma, Jason Rogers, Nick Tubbs and Jesse Taylor followed.
Cody Graham scored the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock victory, Tyler Frye was the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod winner and David Dembowski was first to the Mach-1 Sport Compact checkers.
Graham took the lead on lap six and led to the finish of the Hobby Stock show. Kurt Hansen, Garrett Hager, Jeromy Wagner and Jason Fusselman rounded out the top five.
Frye made his move to the front of the Northern SportMod field following a lap 15 restart. Cory Struckhoff, Kurtis Pihl, Matthew Crowell and Mike Appel followed him across the stripe.
Dembowski led all but the opening lap of the Sport Compact feature. Dean Herzog finished in the runner-up spot, followed by Brandon Lobdell, Shyla Hughes and Vincent Jasper.
More than 150 race teams representing six states converged on Hays Friday evening. All five IMCA divisions see action again on Saturday.
